This 11 day rafting adventure takes you the full navigable length of the Franklin River, deep in the heart of Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area. Our journey includes a day's walk to the imposing Frenchman's Cap, the monarch of the south west, as well as rafting through one of Tasmania's most spectacular gorges. Accommodation both sides of the trip plus your airport transfers are included making the trip 13 days in total. Unpredictable river levels on the Franklin, mean our trip will always be an adventure -- it is possible to encounter both very low levels and floods within days of each other. Whatever the level, rafts offer the best way to explore this unique wilderness. Join us for the trip of a lifetime.

What You Will Be Up To!
  • Day 1

    Arrive in Hobart and transfer to your Hotel to relax. Later on you'll have a pre-departure meeting and a chance for the guides to check out the guides to check you've got the correct gear, and to get anything else that you need

    Day 2

    A gorgeous scenic drive to the river nice and early this morning. We set up the rafts and have a thorough safety and paddle briefing before camping at the junction of the Collingwood and Franklin Rivers.

    Day 3

    Today we will takcle the Log Jam, Nasty Notch, Descension Gorge and float calmly through the Irenaybyss and camp on the side of the river below the gorge.

    Day 4 - 5

    Weather permitting we climb up Frenchman's Cap from our base camp. We'll enjoy spectacular views of the whole of South West Tasmania from the summit. Stopping over for two days gives us flexibility to make the best of the conditions, and do a bit more exploring!

  • Day 6

    One of the longest days on the river during the trip today with lost of great rapids. We camp beneath Sassafras and Myrtle trees and enjoy a great swimming hole.

    Day 7

    There's some challenging rafting through the Great Ravine in store today along with our first portage of the trip at the Churn! Tonight we'll make our camp within the Great Ravine at Coruscades camp.

    Day 8

    We paddle out of the Great Ravine through to the Rafters basin. A mixture of paddling and portaging today through rapids such as Coruscades, Thunderrush and the Mousehole.

    Day 9

    Today we paddle through Propsting Gorge with some of the best rapids on the river including Cascades, the longest of all the rapids on this stretch. We'll camp at at the Black Forest or Newlands Cascades if the weather's good, if it's raining though we get to camp in Newlands Cave for the night!

    Day 10

    Today we paddle through the protected rainforest of the Lower Franklin, stopping off at Blackmand Bend to make camp.

  • Day 11

    Today's higlights include Double Falls, and Big Falls flanked by spectacular limestone Verandah Cliffs. We camp at Sir John Falls, a little way down from the confluence with the Gordon River.

    Day 12

    This morning we catch a boat for a beautiful sail over to Strahan, where we'll be met by our bus to transfer us back to Hobart. This evening we'll have a fairwell dinner to round off the end of a fantastic adventure together!

    After breakfast at the hotel we transfer you back to the airport for your flight back home.

Excellent options exist to fly to Australia from The UK, Europe and North America. You are required to be in Hobart on the first day stated below and you can choose a departure on the last day stated. PLEASE NOTE ALL OUR TRIPS INCLUDE A NIGHT IN HOBART IN A HOTEL BEFORE AND AFTER YOUR TRIPS WHICH IS INCLUDED IN THE TRIP PRICE. We suggest getting flights to Sydney or Melbourne with Qantas, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, American or Delta. We also recommend investigating flight options through Skyscanner if you are in the UK or Kayak if you are in North America. Connections can be made from Sydney or Melbourne to Hobart with Jet Star or Virgin Blue. If you require help with your flight connections or advice, please contact our office teams.

What You Should Bring

We find most of our clients have in their posession already what is needed for a river journey. We have broken down here the items into what you'll need on the river and in camp. An equipment list of what you will require for your adventure will be sent to you prior to your departure.

River Fashion:

  • A pair of Chacos or similar sandals. Trainers are also okay.
  • A pair of River shorts or swimming costume.
  • Long sleeved business shirt to wear under your life jacket in hot destinations.
  • A baseball cap for under the helmet to keep sun off.
  • Wide brimmed sunhat.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Chums for fastening your sunglasses to your head.
  • Nalgene or similar water bottle.
  • Carabiner for fastening water bottle to your boat.
  • Thermal Top for cooler destinations. Medium weight - Heavyweight Capilene or polypropylene is the best.
  • Waterproof sunscreen and lip balm SPF15 minimum.

For evenings and around camp

  • Lightweight long trousers.
  • Lightweight Long Sleeved shirt.
  • Fleece jacket.
  • Ladies should bring a long skirt or sarong to cover your legs whilst in the company of locals.
  • Underwear.
  • Glasses or Contact lenses. Disposable lenses are ideal.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap and shampoo.
  • Forget the cosmetics and hair dryer! But we do suggest moisturizer.
  • Hand wipes
  • A 3-season sleeping bag.
  • Travel Pillow.
  • Small pack towel.
  • Headlamp or head torch and spare batteries.
  • Shoes or boots for wearing around camp and on hikes.
  • Insect Repellent.
  • Any medication you may be taking.

Optional Items

  • Your favourite book or a journal for recording your river memories.
  • Sketchpad.
  • Photographic or video equipment. On most expeditions we provide a waterproof pelicase for these items. We recommend a cleaning kit as sand gets everywhere. Bring a spare memory card or plenty of film. Also bring spare batteries for your camera.
  • Waterproof disposable for the "action" on the raft shots.
  • Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman.
  • An extra bag to bring back a wooden hippo, a carpet, Thanka or anything else you may purchase on your holiday.
  • An iPod or other music preferences. We have speakers.

Personal Spending

  • The only money that you need to bring is for meals in town, souvenirs, DVD, personal items and the beer kitty for the raft trip if you drink. Please remember that many of the countries we visit do offer Credit Card and ATM facilities and for a small charge you can withdraw cash either from your account or Credit Card for convenience.
  • If you wish to pass on a gratuity to your guide we leave this entirely up to you.
  • Basically, we advise you to keep things as light as possible, without skimping on the necessities. It is great to bring back a load of goodies for everybody back at home.
