If you’re short on time but long to experience the many aspects of this alluring country, then this is your trip. Combining white water rafting on the challenging Apurimac river, with a hike into the cloud forest in the foothills of the Andes to marvel at the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu and time to absorb the delights of the city of Cusco. An option to add yet more elements to your trip by choosing to spend one of your days mountain biking in the foothills, or simply taking more time to immerse yourself in Peruvian history and culture in Cusco. Alternative options in Peru for your adventure are in the world’s deepest canyon, The Rio Cotahuasi or the wildlife and wilderness adventure on the Rio Tambopata.

This morning, a spectacular journey to the river. Full safety talk in white water rafting, we cast off into the waters of the mighty Apurimac. The grade II and III rapids this afternoon are excellent training for the days ahead.

The Apurimac was a sacred river to the Incas and thought to be a great source of wisdom. Five hundred years later it is still a river to be treated with the utmost respect.Today we challenge some amazing grade IV and V before arriving at camp.

Your last day on the water. Rapids such as Babalua and Last Laugh that would once have seemed daunting are now just pure adrenaline pulsing fun. Finally you reach a break in the canyon walls and from here we drive back to Cusco for the night.

Enjoy a free day in Cusco for some rest and recuperation. Whether your interest is exploring Inca ruins, mountain biking, visiting Colonial churches, bargain hunting in artisan markets, chocolate museums or just relaxing over a cappuccino on a terrace overlooking the Plaza de Armas, Cusco has it all.

You start the day with an early transfer to catch the train towards Machu Picchu. Jumping off at km104 you pass through the control point and begin your Inca Trail trek. We visit the recently restored ruins of Chachabamba before gradually ascending through tropical cloud forest up towards the base of Wiñay Wayna. Here you climb more steeply on old Inca stairways through these beautiful terraces, stopping to explore the various buildings and water features.
Soon you will reach a final set of stairs to arrive at Inti Punku, the gateway of the Sun. As you step through the old stone gate-way, Machu Picchu appears laid out before your eyes. After plenty of photos you carry on past this wonder of the world to catch the bus down to the lively town of Machu Picchu Pueblo and a well-deserved hotel and shower. Total hiking distance: 11 km.

A day to explore the pinnacle of Inca engineering, Machu Picchu. Eventually the time comes to catch the bus down to Machu Picchu Pueblo and board your train back along the Urubamba River.
